CAORLE E I CASONI
The “Casoni” are the typical fishing huts in the lagoon area of Caorle. They are made of cane and are located in the peaceful area of Falconera ;“Isola dei Casoni” which can only be visited by foot , by bike or by boat. They are characterised not only by the way that they are constructed but also by they way of life lead by the local fishermen in these traditional huts.
The lagoon fishing activity during the war came to a halt, and the “Casoni” adopted a more useful role; they were used as a shelter to refuge all the families from the town of Caorle which was under constant enemy bombing. Once the war had finished, fishing activity started concentrated more towards sea fishing and the new young generations started looking for work in the new industry of tourism.
Although they are not lived in any more, fishermen still enjoy coming here daily to relax and to labour away in this silent area. Where once whole families used to live and work in Falconera , now days, families get together here and organise large dinners based on local fresh fish and accompanied by a glass or two of home made red wine.
Whilst staying in Caorle, it is a definitely must for all tourists to take a walk or a bike ride and visit this peaceful area and try to imagine what Caorle used to be like many years ago
